What to consider when buying cannabis seeds online
Growing cannabis is both an exciting and demanding task. Especially within the legal framework in Germany—such as Cannabis Social Clubs—home cultivation has become more appealing than ever. In this guide, we explain what to look for when choosing cannabis seeds, how to germinate and cultivate them successfully, and which varieties are particularly suitable for beginners.
Choosing the right seeds
The success of your grow starts with selecting the right strain. It all begins with a simple question: What are you hoping to achieve with your cannabis? Should the effects be calming, stimulating, or balanced? Beyond the effect, the structure of the plant is also important, as not everyone has the same growing conditions.
Indica-dominant strains usually grow more compactly, are easy to care for, and offer a physically relaxing effect. Sativa-dominant plants tend to grow taller, require more patience, but reward the grower with a creative and energising experience. Hybrids offer the best of both worlds and are ideal for beginners.
From seed bank to plant – The path to a successful grow
Before a cannabis seed can germinate, proper storage is key. Seeds should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry place—ideally in an airtight container in the fridge. This ensures they remain viable for months or even years.
There are several germination methods, which can be selected depending on experience and environmental conditions:
1. Paper Towel Method (ideal for beginners) Place the seeds between two moist but not soaking wet layers of paper towel. Store them in a resealable plastic container or zip-lock bag in a dark, warm location at around 22–25°C. Make sure the paper remains moist. After 24 to 72 hours—sometimes longer—the seed shell cracks and a small white root tip appears.
2. Direct-to-Soil Method This method is closer to nature but requires a bit more sensitivity. Place the seed about 1–2 cm deep into lightly moistened, low-nutrient soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. This method typically takes longer to germinate but is gentler on the seedling.
3. Germination in Jiffy Tabs or Starter Cubes A clean and efficient method. Place the seeds into pre-soaked peat pellets or rock wool cubes. These retain moisture well and provide a stable start for young plants. They can be easily transplanted later, making them ideal for larger grow setups.
4. Water Germination (for advanced growers) Soak the seeds in a glass of room-temperature water for 12–24 hours. Once the seed sinks, it's ready for the next stage—usually being transferred to paper towel or soil. This method can speed up germination but carries the risk of drowning the seed if left too long.
Once a strong taproot emerges, gently transplant the seedling into a low-nutrient medium—ideally a lightly fertilised light-mix substrate. From this point onward, light becomes essential: indoor grows require 18 to 20 hours of light per day to promote strong growth. Maintain a temperature of 22 to 26°C and a relative humidity of around 60%.
Avoid overwatering your seedlings. In the initial growth phase, a balanced ratio of moisture and oxygen around the roots is crucial. Protect your plants from intense lighting or direct sunlight until they are strong enough to tolerate more exposure.
Autoflowering vs feminised seeds – What does it mean?
Before diving into the individual strains, it's important to understand the terms "autoflowering" and "feminised"—they directly impact how you grow your plants and how demanding your cultivation will be.
Feminised seeds are bred to produce exclusively female plants. This means no time is wasted identifying and removing male plants, which do not produce flowers and may even pollinate your crop, reducing its quality. For growers with limited space, this is a major advantage.
Autoflowering seeds, on the other hand, carry genetics from the Cannabis Ruderalis line. These plants transition into the flowering stage automatically—usually after three to five weeks of growth—regardless of the light schedule. This saves time and simplifies the process, as no change in the light cycle is needed. Autoflowers are ideal for beginners, as they remain compact, mature quickly, and are usually highly resistant to mould and environmental stress.
If you're just starting out or looking for a low-maintenance strain, autoflowers are your best bet. If you want full control over growth time, size, and yield, feminised seeds may be better suited to your needs.
